Who is the Handicapped Scuba Association and what is its mission?
Overcoming diversity, eliminating physical and mental barriers, increasing self-esteem and improving the psycho-physical and social well-being of people with disabilities through underwater sports: this has always been the mission of HSA Italia.
Since 1975 , when the first diving experiences for people with disabilities were just beginning to make their way, the goal of the founders of HSA was to offer an extraordinary opportunity to people with disabilities: to receive the same quality training, certifications and diving adventures that non-disabled people have.
In fact, with the right training and the appropriate tools, even blind people, paraplegics, tetraplegics, polio victims, amputees and people with sensory deficits can enjoy the fascinating beauty of the underwater world.
HSA has also always been committed to the dissemination and promotion of actions in support of accessible tourism , marine, underwater and aquatic activities and medical research activities in favour of people with disabilities.
Why Scuba Diving?
In and under water, limitations, constraints and the wheelchair are abandoned and lost freedoms are rediscovered: you move weightlessly , supported by the gentle push of Archimedes, enveloped in the unique sensation of protection that only water can give, without obstacles or architectural barriers to face.
Thus, the gap between disabled and non-disabled people is significantly reduced, promoting integration, socialization and well-being for all.
The underwater activities, carried out in unique landscape contexts , are not limited to diving alone , but the whole day is a great opportunity to be together, share experiences, without any competitiveness, just with the desire to feel good.
HSA COURSES
The thrill of breathing underwater and flying weightlessly in the wonders of the underwater world are unique experiences that scuba diving provides. Passionate, well-prepared divers leave their wheelchairs and aids behind to fly weightlessly in the wonders of the underwater world and experience unique and fantastic emotions.
Scuba diving is a fascinating activity, often practiced in marine settings rich in beauty, where the immediate and spontaneous cooperation between diving companions facilitates the birth of new friendships, improves daily life and strengthens one's self-esteem.
The thousands of disabled divers, certified HSA around the world, have demonstrated to everyone that anyone who has followed a good training course can practice scuba diving safely and enjoy its many benefits.
What courses does HSA offer?
For those who wish to venture out to discover the sea and its wonders,
HSA Italia offers a complete program of courses: from basic to advanced levels. A fun diving experience accessible to everyone.
People with physical, sensorial and intellectual disabilities can enjoy participation in courses with the guarantee of pleasant, quality and “tailor-made” teaching, where everyone is given the attention they need, according to their needs; where haste has no place. Becoming aware divers, in a safe context, is of fundamental importance to continue cultivating one's passion with friendship and sharing, even after the end of the course.
The training of our instructors is based on internationally recognized and widespread standards and educational programs, which have made history in the world of underwater activities and which have been used for over 35 years.
You too can become a protagonist in the underwater community by obtaining the prestigious international HSA certification: dive into the seas of the world.
How Does an HSA Course Work?
HSA courses follow the same standards as those for non-disabled people, with the important addition of the Multilevel system , which influences the management of the typical buddy system of diving. The training of the HSA diver, both theoretical and practical, reflects that of all other divers, and in some aspects even exceeds it.
Before starting an HSA course, a meeting is required , even online if necessary, to discuss the medical condition of the participant, his general health conditions, the risks associated with diving and to organize a medical examination to certify the physical fitness of the participant for diving.
HSA courses are “ tailor-made ”, taught by expert and competent instructors, but above all happy to be able to give their passion for diving even to those who would not have expected to become a diver.
All courses are taught, when possible, together with other non-HSA students; sharing the emotion of learning to dive has always been a source of lasting friendships and great times spent in company.
