The archaeological site

The tower in question, known among locals as the “Torre Saracena” or “Torre del Faro di Bacoli”, according to some was in Roman times the base of a lighthouse, known as the Faro di Miseno, which subsequently sank due to the bradyseismic phenomena that affect the Phlegraean coast.

The tower is about fourteen meters high, on a seabed that ranges from nineteen to twenty-seven meters; it was built in opus pilarum, and has sections in opus reticulatum and brickwork. The tower is the largest construction of its kind in the gulf. At the base, on its eastern side, a local artist has placed a marble nativity scene, at a depth of about twenty meters. Within fin reach of the tower is a small fiberglass boat, which has been taken over by the local fauna. In the vertical cracks of the tower, it is common to encounter groupers, conger eels and moray eels and, from March, many small lobsters emerge from the ravines. This dive site is famous for its great biodiversity and the peculiarity of its ecosystem.

Furthermore, the tower is located a few metres from the remains of a Roman residential villa, which probably belonged to Ortenzio.
