The archaeological site
The Secca delle Fumose, a key point of Phlegraean thermalism, is characterized by the presence of several pillars. The latest hypotheses of archaeologists see the pillars as the base for a large platform in which the vapors were supposed to fill the baths, connected to the mainland through the nearby Via Herculanea.
As you explore this underwater path between the pylons, you will discover a fascinating world covered with colonies of marine flora and fauna. The richness of marine life here is impressive, offering you the opportunity to get up close to marine creatures of various species.
What makes Secca delle Fumose truly unique are the active fumaroles. These fumaroles are columns of gas bubbles of volcanic origin that rise from the seabed, evidence of the volcanic past of this area. You will be surrounded by these extraordinary natural manifestations, which add an element of wonder and mystery to your exploration.
You will also be able to observe sulphur deposits scattered across the seabed, a further sign of the unique geological history of this place.
The emergence of hot water and steam in the middle of the sea must have been very strong even in ancient times, so much so as to push the ancient Romans to build an artificial island to enjoy the healthiness of these products of Phlegraean volcanism.
An almost lunar landscape placed on the seabed, in union between marine flora and fauna, thanks to the creation of a habitat shaped by the strength of the subsoil of the Campi Flegrei.
